The government of Rwanda teamed up with the BH Mayer Mint of Germany in 2008 to produce an annual silver bullion coin program representative of the nation, as well as the continent of Africa as a whole. Like many other popular bullion coin programs around the world, wildlife was viewed as an inspiration for the design of coins in this series.
Rwandan Wildlife Series coins debuted in 2008 with the mountain gorilla, one of the most majestic creatures on the continent, as the design representative. In the subsequent years, different animal species have featured on the obverse face of the coin. The 2008 Gorilla coins remain the hardest to find, as mintage was an extremely low 5,000 in that first year.
All 2016 Silver Rwandan Meerkat coins in this product listing have Mint State 70 grades from the NGC. Considered perfect specimens, these coins have full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws of any kind.
The obverse features the new meerkat design for 2016. A group of meerkats is featured in the lower-left field. These small creatures are part of the mongoose family, and are prevalent throughout southern Africa.
On the reverse is the redesigned coat of arms for Rwanda. Revamped in 2001, it includes the national motto on a banner below the crest, the name of the Central Bank of Rwanda, and the coin’s face value in Francs. All engravings on this face are in Kinyarwanda, the tribal dialect of people from this region of Africa.
