Silver Somalian Elephant coins are part of the African Wildlife Series from the Bavarian State Mint. The elephant originally appeared on the African Wildlife Series coin issued for the nation of Zambia in 1999, but was switched to Somalia starting in 2004. Through the history of the silver coin program, the Somalian Elephant has had a tightly controlled mintage.
Through the first five years of production, Silver Somalian Elephant coins were limited to a mintage of just 5,000 coins. Following the global financial crisis of 2008, the popularity of precious metals drove the Bavarian State Mint to begin striking the coins to meet demand. Mintage jumped immediately in 2009 to an astonishing 130,000 coins from the previous level of 5,000.
On the obverse side of the 2016 1 oz Silver Somalian Elephant coin is the latest image of Africa’s largest land mammal. Each year the mint releases a new design featuring the African Elephant in its natural environment. Engravings of “African Wildlife,” “Elephant,” and the coin’s weight, metal content, and purity accompany the images on this side.
The reverse of all coins in the series features the coat of arms for the Republic of Somalia. The nation’s emblem is surrounded by engravings of “Somali Republic,” the year of minting, and the face value of the coin.
Germany’s Bavarian State Mint was founded in 1158, and is operated as a state-owned entity of the Free State of Bavaria. Each year the mint produces Somalian Elephant coins in silver and gold, with proof and bullion versions available.
