The story of Adam and Eve in the Christian Bible is often referred to as the “Fall of Man.” Depicted through two different storylines in the Book of Genesis. In one, Adam and Eve are not named specifically, with God merely creating humankind in his own image. The other gives a specific name to the first male and female individuals God created. In the version of events in the Book of Genesis that gives name to Adam and Eve, God first creates Adam from dust and gives him the Garden of Eden in which to live, till the ground, and eat freely from the trees with the exception of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Eve is later created as Adam’s companion using one of his own ribs. Innocent and unashamed of their naked existence, a serpent (Satan) tricks Eve into eating fruit from the forbidden tree and sharing with Adam. Known as the original sin, God casts Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden, never to return.
In the Silver Biblical Coin Series from Scottsdale Mint, Gustave Dore’s popular illustrations of the Bible collection of artworks (completed in 1866) are captured on the reverse of each coin. The coins are all high-relief strikings on rimless blanks, with edge-lettering that features laser-engraved individual serial numbers.
The reverse of the 2016 2 oz Silver Adam and Eve Biblical Coin includes the depiction of Adam and Eve as they are cast out into the darkness and unknown, leaving behind the safety and beauty of the Garden of Eden.
On the obverse of all coins in the series is Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy. Her right-profile portrait on these coins comes from Raphael Maklouf, and was created in 1984 as the third-generation effigy of the Queen for British and commonwealth coinage. It remained in circulation through 1997.
