Silver Chinese Panda coins originated in 1982 as a proof specimen available in a 1 oz weight. The program was available as such through 1985, with a one-year hiatus in 1986. The coins returned in 1987 with a ½ oz bullion version also available, and regular production of bullion coins resumed in full in 1988.
These 2016 Silver Chinese Panda coins feature a unique 24-karat gold gilded finish on the obverse face. The image of the panda bears a layer of the gold to create a stark contrast between the coin’s traditional silver blank and the gilded layer of gold, helping the panda standout more to the eye of the beholder.
Each Silver Chinese Panda available from Silver.com in this product listing has a Brilliant Uncirculated grade. Coins in this condition show no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice imperfections such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
On the obverse face is the image of a panda crawling along the trunk of a fallen tree. This is the latest design from the Chinese Mint, and is available only on the 2016 Silver Chinese Panda. The reverse side of the coin features the Temple of Heaven from central Beijing, which has featured on coins in the series since 1982.
The Chinese Mint operates numerous facilities throughout the country under the oversight of the People’s Bank of China. Silver Chinese Panda coins are struck without mint marks, making it difficult to determine the origin of any individual coin.
