As a First Strike coin, these products must meet certain criteria before being awarded that designation. Each coin must arrive at the PCGS depository, or an approved third-party depository, within the first 30 days of the release date set by the Chinese Mint.
Silver Chinese Panda coins originated as proof specimens in 1982, and were available through 1985 only in proof. The coins were not struck in 1986, and returned in 1987 with a proof and a new bullion ½ oz coin. Since 1988, the bullion version has been available annually with a new design on the obverse face.
This year’s panda design features one of the loveable creatures crawling along the trunk of a fallen tree. Engravings are simple and include the coin’s face value in Yuan.
On the reverse is the image of the Temple of Heaven, a religious site and community gathering place located in the center of Beijing. Engravings on this side include “People’s Republic of China” in Mandarin above the Temple’s image, and the year of issue below.
