Fort Moultrie is part of the Fort Sumter complex of naval defenses along the American Eastern Seaboard, built in the mid-1700s ahead of the nation’s Revolutionary War to protect the city of Charleston, South Carolina. The fort’s performance during a June 1776 attack by the British Navy gave the state its nickname and pride.
During the battle, the fort constructed of palmetto wood resisted the canon shot of British Naval ships, sending many of the balls bouncing off its flexible, yet strong sides. The British were not able to blast the South Carolina militia into submission, and the Americans were able to fight off British ground forces as well. Today, South Carolina is known as the Palmetto State, and the tree itself appears on the state flag.
On the reverse of the 2016 5 oz Silver ATB Fort Moultrie Coin you’ll find the image of a South Carolina militia member running into the midst of British fire to raise the South Carolina colonial flag, raising the spirits of the defenders and help lead to a defeat of the British.
The obverse of all Silver ATB Coins includes the image of President George Washington. The first elected leader of the United States of America, Washington has appeared on the obverse of American quarters since 1932. His left-profile portrait was created by John Flanagan in 1932, and was based upon a 1786 bust of Washington.
All America the Beautiful coins are produced by the United States Mint at the Denver and Philadelphia Mint facilities. The coins are available each year in collectible versions and bullion options.
