The Cumberland Mountains are a small range in the southeastern portion of the Appalachian Mountains. On the reverse side of 2016 Burnished Silver ATB Cumberland Gap Coins is the image of a frontiersman gazing toward the western horizon through the Cumberland Gap. The Cumberland Gap is a natural break in the Cumberland Mountain range near Cumberland Mountain. Its rock faces open up a split in the range and have long allowed for passage from the east to the west.

The obverse of 2016 Burnished Silver ATB Coins features the portrait of George Washington. This left-profile portrait of President Washington was created in 1932 by John Flanagan using a 1786 bust of the president as inspiration. Flanagan’s work was put on the US circulation quarter in 1932 to honor President Washington’s 200th birthday. It remains there today as the longest-running US coin design in the country’s history.
