For the 30th anniversary of the Silver American Eagle coin’s release, the United States Mint has broken with tradition for the striking of the proof version of the world’s most popular coin. Each of these 2016 Proof Silver American Eagle Coins is a perfect specimen according to the PCGS. Coins with a PR70 grade have their full, original mint luster and lack all detracting flaws on the surface areas.
AS a First Strike coin, these Silver American Eagle proofs had to arrive at the PCGS or an approved depository within the first 30 days of their release by the United States Mint in order to qualify for this designation.
On the obverse of the 2016 Proof Silver American Eagle is the image of Walking Liberty. Created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, this image is one of the most beautiful in American history and is celebrating its centennial in 2016.
The reverse of the Proof Silver American Eagle coin features the heraldic eagle of the United States. Originally designed in 1794, and refined for these coins by John Mercanti, the image includes an American bald eagle set behind the heraldic shield of the US. Mercanti was US Mint Chief Engraver from 1986 to 2010.
All Proof Silver American Eagle Coins are struck by the United States Mint at its West Point Mint facility, as indicated by the presence of a “W” mint mark on the coin’s reverse face.
