Each of these 2016 Proof Silver American Eagle Coins is a perfect specimen according to the PCGS. Deep-cameo, or DCAM, coins have a deeply-mirrored, clear background field with a strong, frosted matte finish to the design set.

For the 30th anniversary of the Silver American Eagle coin’s release, the United States Mint has broken with tradition for the striking of the proof version of the world’s most popular coin. For the first time ever, edge lettering is being used on the Proof Silver American Eagle to denote the 30th anniversary of the coin series.

Anniversary issue years tend to have the highest mintage figures for the Proof Silver American Eagle. For example, 1996 saw an increase for the proof issue after years of declining demand. 2006 has the second highest mintage of Proof Silver American Eagles in program history, with 1.09 million coins purchased in the 20th anniversary release.

On the obverse of the 2016 Proof Silver American Eagle is the image of Walking Liberty. Created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, this design originated at a time when all American circulation coinage was being revamped. Walking Liberty appeared on the half-dollar coin from 1916 to 1947.

The reverse of the Silver American Eagle always features John Mercanti’s refined heraldic eagle of the United States. The image includes an American bald eagle behind the national heraldic shield, with arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Above its head are 13 stars representing the original colonies.
