Each year the Perth Mint releases its annual silver bullion coins with a new design. The Silver Australian Kookaburra debuted in 1990 and is the longest running program at the mint currently. There is a new image of the largest species of kingfisher bird depicted on these coins each year. Likewise, the Silver Australian Koala coin features a new image of the cuddly marsupial each year following its 2008 debut.
The 2016 Silver Australian Kangaroo coin is the newest annual bullion coin release from Perth Mint, and it marked a major first in the history of the Perth Mint. The Silver Australian Kangaroo coin debuted in 2016 as the first-ever .9999 fine silver bullion coin from the Perth Mint, and unlike the Kookaburra and Koala, it will feature the same design on the reverse each year.
In this 2016 Proof Silver Australian Three-Coin Collection you receive three of the nation’s most iconic silver coins in a brilliant proof striking with high-relief finish. High-relief coins from the Perth Mint are struck on concave blanks that are struck multiple times to create a stunning 3D visual for the coin’s design.
On the reverse of each coin you’ll find a different 2016 issue design for the nation’s Australian Kookaburra, Australian Koala, and Australian Kangaroo series. For the Kookaburra coin, a lone kookaburra (from the kingfisher species) is depicted on the post of a barb-wire fence. The Silver Australian Koala design includes the image of one of the world’s few marsupials walking along the branch of a tree. The Silver Kangaroo features the red kangaroo species hopping across the Outback.
The obverse of all coins in the 2016 Proof Silver Australian Three Coin Set feature the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, this is the fourth-generation depiction of Her Majesty to appear on Australian coinage since 1952.
