The United States Mint is celebrating the centennial of some of its most popular designs from the 20th century. Long before presidents reigned supreme on American coinage, inspirational designs of American icons appeared on the obverse and reverse of the nation’s circulation coin. Mercury Dime coins were first released by the US Mint in 1916 as part of a wider redesign effort to overhaul American coinage. The design was created by Adolph A. Weinman and featured a left-profile image of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap. The image reminded so many of the Roman god Mercury that the coin became known as the Mercury Dime, instead of the Winged Liberty Dime.
Gold American Mercury Dime coins are the first of three planned releases to celebrate the Mercury Dime, the Standing Liberty Quarter, and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. All three designs debuted in 1916, and each new Gold Centennial Coin features 24-karat gold, making them just the third coins offered with such impressive purity.
On the obverse of each coin you’ll find the Winged Liberty design, complete with an engraving of “Liberty,” “2016,” and Weinman’s “AW” initials. The reverse side of the 2016-W 1/10 oz Gold American Mercury Dime coin features the Roman fasces with an olive branch. The combined symbolism represents the nation’s military might and readiness, as well as a desire for peace.
All Gold American Mercury Dime coins are struck by the West Point Mint, as indicated by the “W” mint mark. The coins are limited to a mintage of 125,000 coins in total with a household ordering limit of 10.
