Adolph A. Weinman’s Winged Liberty design was originally referred to popularly as the Mercury Dime. This was a result of the Phrygian cap worn by Liberty in the design, which caused many to misconstrue the image as that of the Roman god Mercury.
On the obverse you’ll find that image of Winged Liberty, along with engravings that recreate the design of the original Mercury Dime. Added to the design features of the 2016 1/10 oz Gold American Mercury Dime are the initials of Weinman, “AW.”
The reverse of the coin features Weinman’s original Roman fasces design. The fasces is a symbol of unity and strength, marking America’s military might and readiness. It is wrapped in an olive branch, signifying a desire for peace.
