For the 30th anniversary of the Gold American Eagle coin program, the United States Mint is changing the edge finish of its proof and burnished coins for the first time ever. All coins in the program have been struck since 1986 with reeded edges, but for 2016 the proof and burnished will have smooth edges with 30th anniversary lettering.
On the obverse face of the coin is the image of Liberty that Augustus Saint-Gaudens created in 1907. His image was the first in a series of new coin designs to grace American gold coinage, and originally featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933.
The reverse of the coin features a design set exclusive to the Gold American Eagle. Created by private artist and sculptor Miley Busiek, this image features a male bald eagle flying over the family nest, which contains a group of hatchlings and the female eagle standing guard.
The 2016 1/4 oz Proof Gold American Eagle coins in this product listing from Silver.com have PR70 grades from the PCGS. These coins exhibit full, original luster from the mint and bear no detracting flaws on the surfaces. First Strike coins have to arrive at the PCGS or a PCGS-approved depository within the first 24 hours of the US Mint’s release date.
DCAM coins feature strong, frosted matte finishes on the design sets of the coin’s surface and are offset by the deeply-mirrored, clear background field of the coin.
