2016 saw the introduction of the Chiwoo Cheonwang silver and gold medallions with extremely limited mintages in just a 1 oz weight. The silver Chiwoo Cheonwangs had an initial mintage of 30,000 in 2016, which expanded to 50,000 for 2017. The gold medallions in the series had a very low mintage of 2,016 to commemorate the debut year of issue.
For 2017, there are two changes to the Chiwoo Cheonwang medallions. First and foremost, there is the growth of the program to include these new 2017 1/10 oz Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang Medallions for the first time. Second, there is an alteration to the reverse design and the figure of Chiwoo himself.
On the reverse of the 2017 1/10 oz Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang Medallion is the figure of Chiwoo as he sits atop his warhorse. He is depicted wearing his full battle regalia, which includes body armor, an armored face mask, and his shield in his left hand. His right hand holds a long war spear.
The obverse of the 1/10 oz Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang Medallion includes the original design from 2016. It depicts the armored face mask of Chiwoo on the surface of his battle shield. This side has the important inscriptions of the nation of issue, weight and metal content, as well as the name of KOMSCO.
All 2017 1/10 oz Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang Medallions are shipped inside of plastic assay cards. KOMSCO issued four different colors for these cards, with 10,000 of the total mintage packaged in white cards. These red label cards account for 5,000 of the overall mintage and feature the assay certifications for the gold medallions.
KOMSCO, known as Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation, is the official government-owned printing and minting facility of the nation. It produces both circulation coins, banknotes, passports, government documents, and bullion coins.
