Prior to 2017, the Silver Somalian Elephant was available only in 1 oz and 1 Kilogram weights for the bullion and proof versions. However, with the latest release the Bavarian State Mint has shown its commitment to the massively popular series with a big expansion that brings more coins to market for numismatists.
The 2017 Silver Somalian Elephant is now available in three new fractional weight coins, which includes the ¼ oz and ½ oz coin in addition to this 2017 1/10 oz Silver Somalian Elephant coin. On top of that, the mint added three larger weight coins with a 2 oz, 5 oz, and 10 oz option in the bullion version.
Each 2017 1/10 oz Silver Somalian Elephant Coin available on Silver.com today is a BU specimen. Coins in BU condition exhibit no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice minor flaws such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks from the coining process.
On the obverse of each Silver Somalian Elephant coin is the latest elephant design. It features a single elephant in the middle of the Serengeti, with a small patch of grass in the foreground and a hut, with palm tree, in the background. Engravings include “African Wildlife,” “Elephant,” and the coin’s weight, purity, and metal content.
The reverse of the 2017 1/10 oz Silver Somalian Elephant Coin bears the Somali coat of arms. It is included along with the engravings of “Somali Republic” above, the year of issue “2017” split on either side of the heraldic shield, and the face value of “10 Shillings” at the bottom.
