In 1986 the United States Mint unveiled the American Eagle program. The official bullion coins of the nation, the gold variant featured a bullion and proof version that first year. The bullion coin had all four weights, 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz, available immediately. The proof version had just a 1 oz coin in 1986, with the ½ oz added in 1987 and the ¼ and 1/10 oz coins joining in 1988.
The Lady Liberty design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens on the Gold American Eagle features America’s beloved Liberty in full-length figure, her Greek gown flowing in the breeze as she strides confidently forward out of the setting sun. In Saint-Gaudens’ original design, the US Capitol Building is featured at her feet and she is surrounded by 46 stars. This image was updated for the Gold Eagle, with the addition of two stars from the 1912 design (48 stars) reflect Hawaii and Alaska’s admission to the Union.
All 2017 ½ oz Gold American Eagles here today are perfect specimens according to the PCGS. Coins with an MS70 grade have full, original mint luster and lack all detracting flaws. The First Strike designation is for coins that arrive at the PCGS for certification within 30 days of the official 2017 Gold Eagle release date set by the US Mint.
The obverse of all 2017 ½ oz Gold American Eagle coins includes Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ brilliant depiction of Liberty. Originally used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, the image was introduced at first with just 46 stars on it to represent the number of states in the Union.
On the reverse of Gold American Eagle coins is the depiction of a group of bald eagles in their nest. This family unit includes a group of hatchlings in the nest, a female standing guard over the hatchlings, and a male flying overhead.
