The Niue Hawksbill coin series is one of the younger options in the silver bullion marketplace, but it is also one of the most popular. When introduced in 2010, the Niue Hawksbill Coin was actually known as the Fiji Taku. The coins were originally offered by the New Zealand Mint for the nation of Fiji. Though the core tenet of the design was the same, that of the Hawksbill turtle swimming through bubbly ocean waters on the reverse, there were differences as well.
Instead of the modern engraving of “Turtle” on the left-hand side of the reverse field, the word “Taku” was engraved. Taku is the Fijian language word for turtle. The obverse had an entirely different design from 2010 to 2012. The Fijian coat of arms was featured. In 2013, the final year of the Fiji Taku, Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy by Raphael Maklouf was featured. Beginning in 2014, the coins were issued for Niue as the Silver Niue Hawksbill.
All 2017 ½ oz Silver New Zealand Niue Hawksbill Turtle Coins in this listing are in BU condition. Coins in BU condition show no signs of wear and tear, but imperfections are possible. You may notice breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, and contact marks as a result of the production process.
The obverse of all Silver Niue Hawksbill Turtle Coins now features the fourth-generation depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Captured in right-profile relief, this portrait was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
On the reverse of the 2017 ½ oz Silver New Zealand Niue Hawksbill Turtle is the image of that namesake creature as it swims through the bubbles in the South Pacific. The creatures often migrate between the northern island of New Zealand and the islands of Niue as they seek mating grounds during mating season.
