On the reverse of the 2017 Gold Somalian Elephant you’ll find the coat of arms for Somalia. This image features a pair of leopards on either side of the heraldic shield, with a single star set against a backdrop of horizontal lines on the shield. Engravings include “Somali Republic,” “2017” split on either side of the shield, and “50 Shillings.”
The obverse of all 2017 1/25 oz Gold Somalian Elephant coins bears the latest African elephant design in the series. Changed on a yearly basis to increase the value to collectors, this year’s image features an elephant standing on the Savannah with its trunk raised. Grass in the foreground gives way to a traditional hut with a palm tree towering above it in the background.
All Somalian Elephant coins, gold, silver, and platinum, are products of the Bavarian State Mint. Located in Munich, the mint was opened in 1158 and is today one of the primary mints in the German national minting system.
