The nation’s official gold bullion coin program offers the type of diversity that is lacking in the silver version. While the Silver Eagle is immensely popular, the Gold American Eagle offers more variety with its four weights and a unique, brilliant design of its own from the history of American coinage. The Gold American Eagle broke with traditional minting standards at the US Mint when it was introduced. AT this point in history the US Mint had not struck a coin in anything greater than .900 gold fineness since 1837. The Gold Eagle was the first 22-karat gold coin struck in the United States in nearly 150 years.
The obverse face of the 2017 ¼ oz Gold American Eagle coin features the Liberty design from Saint-Gaudens. She is depicted walking toward the viewer with her torch held high in her right hand. The national capital of Washington DC is visible behind her, while brilliant rays of sunshine silhouette her body. Saint-Gaudens’ original design was altered slightly for the Gold Eagle with the addition of two stars to represent the total 50 states of the US.
On the reverse of all 2017 ¼ oz Gold American Eagle Coins is Miley Busiek’s bald eagle design. In a departure from other designs, she chose to depict a family of bald eagles in its nest. As the male flies overhead, a female watches a group of hatchlings to keep them safe in the nest below.
The 2017 ¼ oz Gold American Eagles in this listing are in perfect condition from the PCGS. Coins with a Mint State 70 grade exhibit full, original mint luster and lack all possible detracting flaws on the surface areas of the coin.
