The Somalian Elephant Series from the Bavarian State Mint is now one of the world’s most diverse programs overall. On a general level, the series consists of gold, silver, and platinum coins in both bullion and proof versions. Go deeper, and you’ll find an expansive offering of coins.

In 2016, the Bavarian State Mint added the first-ever Platinum Somalian Elephant coin, the first significant expansion of the series since the addition of the Gold Somalian Elephant coin. For 2017, the program is growing even more.

On top of adding two new fractional weights to the Gold Somalian Elephant, the ¼ oz and ½ oz, the mint added six new weights to the Silver Elephant. It now includes three new fractional weights and three new full weights of 2 oz, 5 oz, and 10 oz.

Each 2017 1/50 oz Gold Somalian Elephant listed here is a Brilliant Uncirculated specimen. Coins in this condition have no signs of wear and tear on any of the surfaces, but you may find breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks from the production process.

The reverse of all Gold Somalian Elephants continues to feature the coat of arms for Somalia. This image features a single star on a heraldic shield that features a background of horizontal lines. There are leopards on either side of the shield, and two spears cross beneath it with a ribbon wrapped around the spears.

On the obverse of all 2017 1/50 oz Gold Somalian Elephant coins you’ll find the image of an African elephant. Each year these coins are released the Bavarian State Mint uses a new obverse image of the elephant, lending value to these coins as a collector’s item. This year’s design includes an elephant standing just in front of a grass-roof hut in the background.

Gold Somalian Elephant coins are sought after in anticipation for gold’s continued historic value, which you can monitor minute by minute via our active charts that show spot gold price.
