The Lion of England was chosen as the first of 10 releases in the Queen’s Beast collection from the Royal Mint. The most important figure in English heraldry, the Lion of England debuted in 2016 on a 2 oz silver coin, ¼ oz gold coin, and a 1 oz gold coin. In 2017, the mint is bringing the design back in the bullion series.
Although two subsequent designs have debuted in the bullion series in 2017, the Royal Mint has ceased upon the popularity of the collection by expanding it in 2017, starting with the original offering of the Lion of England design. In addition to a 10 oz silver option, you will now also find the 2017 1 oz Platinum British Queen’s Beast Lion Coin.
Each of the 2017 1 oz Platinum British Queen’s Beast Lion Coins in this listing has a near-perfect grade from the NGC. Coins with a Mint State 69 certification have full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws.
On the obverse of all British Queen’s Beast Lion Coins is Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy. Her Majesty appears on the obverse of all British coinage, and this design from Jody Clark was created in 2015. Clark, the youngest Royal Mint engraver to ever design the monarch’s portrait, created this right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as the fifth-generation depiction of Her Majesty since her 1952 ascension to the throne.
The reverse of the 2017 1 oz Platinum British Queen’s Beast Lion Coin includes the Royal Arms of England in the foreground, with its traditional column of three lions. Behind it, a massive beast wearing a crown stands on its hind legs while one forepaw grips the royal arms, and the other is raised to strike in defense of the crown.
