Britannia is a term that has been used in Britain and Europe for thousands of years. First appearing around 2,000 years ago, it originally was the name given to the British Isles as a newly-conquered province of the Roman Empire. Starting in the mid-18th century, Britannia made her first appearance on British coinage following the formation of a United Kingdom of England, Wales, and Scotland.

The Silver Britannia coin was created in 1997 to accompany the Gold Britannia in the Royal Mint’s official bullion collection. The silver coins originally featured a less-than-.999 silver content, but as of 2013 the purity has been increased to a minimum fineness of .999 silver.

Each of these 2017 Colorized Silver Britannia coins has beautiful real-life hues and colors added to the coin’s reverse design. On the reverse of the Silver British Britannia you’ll find the depiction of Britannia, her Corinthian helmet glittering a gold-hue, her trident alive with color, and the red, white, and blue of the Union Jack clearly visible on her shield.

The obverse of all 2017 Colorized Silver Britannias includes the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s effigy appears on the obverse of all commonwealth coins, but British coins have the most up-to-date effigy. Created in 2015 by Jody Clark, this is the fifth-generation image of the world’s longest reigning monarch to appear on British currency.

All 2017 Silver Britannia coins available here are in BU condition. Coins in this condition have no signs of wear and tear, but you may notice minor flaws ranging from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks from the striking process at the Royal Mint.

The Royal Mint is one of the world’s oldest, founded originally in the 9th century. These Silver Britannia coins are an original product of the mint, but colorization has been added by Emporium Hamburg, a third-party authorized coin dealer in Germany.
