In total, there are 10 planned designs for the Queen’s Beast Collection from the Royal Mint. Each design reflects a beast critical to English heraldry and was featured in statue form at the official coronation ceremony for Queen Elizabeth II. Though she ascended to the throne on February 6, 1952 upon her father King George VI’s death, her official coronation didn’t occur until 1953.
The Queen’s Beast Collection debuted with three bullion coins; a first-ever 2 oz silver coin, a ¼ oz gold coin, and a 1 oz gold coin. The Lion of England was the initial design in 2016 for the bullion series, and leads the way again in 2017 as the proof versions of the coin make their debut for collectors.
Each 2017 1 oz Proof Gold British Queen’s Beast Lion Coin is produced with a process that results in a distinguished appearance and sharpness of detail in the design. There is also a mirror-like background field to the coins.
The obverse of all 2017 1 oz Proof Gold British Queen’s Beast Lion Coins are available with Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy. Created in 2015 by Royal Mint Engraver Jody Clark, this is the fifth-generation image of Her Majesty to feature on British coinage.
On the reverse of all Proof Gold British Queen’s Beast Lion Coins you’ll find the Lion of England. Rather than the traditional depiction of the three lions on the national coat of arms, you’ll find a massive beast standing on its hind legs in front of the heraldic shield of England. Wearing a crown on its head, one forepaw holds the shield while the other is raised prepared to defend the kingdom.
