Released on October 3, 1947, Mickey’s Delayed Date was the final Mickey Mouse cartoon that featured Walt Disney as the voice of the famous mouse. The animated cartoon was produced by Walt Disney Productions and distributed by RKO Radio Pictures. It was directed by Charles Nichols and focused on Mickey as he rushed to make a date with Minnie Mouse that he’d nearly forgotten about.

The reverse of the 2017 Proof Gold Mickey Mouse Mickey’s Delayed Date Coin depicts Mickey dressed up in a tuxedo as he rushes to make his fancy date with Minnie. His girlfriend has to constantly remind him about the upcoming date and catches him off guard as he is napping on the couch with a final reminder that he is late. With Pluto’s help, Mickey gets dressed for the date only to lose his tickets.

The animated short follows Pluto as he chases down Mickey to get him the tickets before he meets up with Minnie. Mickey, meanwhile, is worried because in his hustle to meet Minnie he is splashed by gutter water from a passing car and appears rundown. As it happens, the date was a “hard-times” costume party and Mickey ends up fitting right in.

On the obverse of the 2017 1 oz Proof Gold Mickey Mouse Mickey’s Delayed Date coins is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is showcased here in the fourth-generation effigy from Ian Rank-Broadley that remains popular on some Commonwealth coins to this date.
