Currier & Ives was formed in 1834 by Nathaniel Currier as a lithograph company that took black-and-white prints from artists and transformed them into colorized lithographs that were hand painted. In 1857, he invited James Merritt Ives to move up from his position as the company’s bookkeeper and accountant to be his partner, forming Currier & Ives.
In this listing, you can purchase the 2017 1 oz Silver Niue Currier & Ives Snowflake Coin from Coin Jewels. The coin ships inside of its protective black box and each one includes a Certificate of Authenticity. The Currier & Ives lithograph featured on the coin was originally created in 1862 and depicted a large group skating on a frozen pond in Central Park.
The reverse of the 2017 1 oz Silver Niue Currier & Ives Snowflake Coin includes the image of the central couple from that famous lithograph. The couple on this coin skate alone on the frozen pond with snowflakes falling down around them and an engraving of “Happy Holidays” above.
On the obverse of the coin you’ll find the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s portrait appears on all British and commonwealth coinage, and the Queen’s image is updated regularly over the course of her reign. This is the fourth-generation depiction of Queen Elizabeth II and was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
Each coin in this release has a beautiful filigree snowflake. The filigree snowflake is handmade for the coins so it is as unique as every frozen flake that falls from the sky during a winter’s snow.
