To mark the 50th anniversary of the Gold Krugerrand coin series, the South African Mint has undertaken the first-ever expansion of the world’s longest running bullion coin series. After 50 years alone, the Gold Krugerrand now has company in the form of the first-ever Silver South African Krugerrand coin. Today, the 2017 1 oz Silver South African Krugerrand Coin is available to you online at Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Ships to you in a protective plastic capsule and certificate of authenticity!
  • First-ever Silver South African Krugerrand coin!
  • Consists of One Troy ounce of .999 fine silver in Premium Uncirculated condition.
  • Obverse of coin features image of Paul Kruger.
  • Reverse depicts the Springbok antelope.

These coins are a moment 50 years in the making from the South African Mint. Gold Krugerrand coins debuted in 1967 as a means of promoting not only South Africa’s vast gold reserves to private investors, but also promoting gold bullion coins as a means of securing personal wealth. The Silver Krugerrand is the first Krugerrand coin struck in a metal other than gold.

All of the new 2017 1 oz Silver South African Krugerrand coins listed here have a gorgeous mint luster and a distinct engraving, which makes the coins of this initial release truly worthy of a Premium Uncirculated grade.

While many new-issue silver and gold coins feature a Brilliant Uncirculated finish, the South African Mint considers these coins Premium Uncirculated coins. This unique condition is attributed to both the quality of the silver used in the production of each Silver Krugerrand, as well as the state-of-the-art laser etching technology used to bring an incredible new level of detail to life on the Krugerrand design.

On the obverse of all Silver South African Krugerrand Coins you’ll find the left-profile portrait of one of South Africa’s greatest political and military leaders. Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, known better as Paul Kruger, led the Republic of South Africa against the British during Boer Wars and became third president of the free nation from 1883 to 1900.

The reverse of all 2017 1 oz Silver South African Krugerrand Coins includes the image of the Springbok antelope. Both the antelope design and Kruger’s portrait on the modern Krugerrand coins were refined by Otto Schultz in 1984.

The South African Mint is the official sovereign mint of the Republic of South Africa. Headquartered in Centurion, in Gauteng province outside of Pretoria, it produces coinage for the South African Reserve Bank.
