Silver Somalian Elephant coins have undergone various changes in the 14-year history of the coin series. When originally issued, the 1 oz coins had a 1,000 Shilling face value and .999 fine silver content. In 2007, the face value was adjusted down to 100 Shillings for 1 oz Silver Elephants.
In 2016, the Bavarian State Mint increased the purity of the popular coin from .999 fineness up to .9999 fineness. Now, in 2017 the mint has expanded from just a 1 oz and 1 Kilogram coin to feature three fractional weights, (1/10 oz, ¼ oz, and ½ oz) as well as three new weights above 1 oz (2 oz, 5 oz, and 10 oz).
On the reverse of these 2017 Silver Somalian Elephant coins you’ll find the image of the coat of arms for Somalia. The image features a single star against a background of horizontal lines on the nation’s heraldic shield. On either side of the shield, leopards are standing and holding the shield.
The obverse for the brand-new 2017 10 oz Silver Somalian Elephant Coin features the all-new African elephant design. It depicts a single elephant standing on the Savannah, with a small hut in the background.
All 2017 10 oz Silver Somalian Elephant coins available today from Silver.com are BU specimens. Coins with a Brilliant Uncirculated grade show no signs of wear and tear, though you’ll notice minor flaws such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
The Bavarian State Mint produces all Silver Somalian Elephant coins, as well as its gold and platinum counterparts. Located in Munich, Germany, it is one of the nation’s oldest mints and plays a vital role in modern minting for the nation.
