Dr. Strange first appeared in the Marvel Comics universe in Strange Tales, which was released in July 1963. The character was created by legendary writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. His full name was Stephen Vincent Strange, and his affiliations throughout the comic grouping included the Avengers, New Avengers, and The Order, for example.
