All of the coins in the Queen’s Beast Collection feature obverse and reverse designs from Jody Clark. In 2015, Clark became the youngest Royal Mint artist/engraver to create the image of the monarch on British coinage. He was just 33 when he developed the fifth-generation image of Queen Elizabeth II.
Clark is also responsible for the 10 animals that will feature in the Queen’s Beast Collection. He’ll be recreating each of the animals from the original sculptures that were present in Westminster Abbey in 1953 when Queen Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of England, and those designs are beautifully captured on these silver and gold coins.
On the reverse of the 2017 2 oz British Queen’s Beast Dragon Silver Coin is the image of the Red Dragon of Wales. The dragon is often depicted holding a shield bearing a lion in each quarter of it, which was the coat of arms for Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last true and native Prince of Wales.
The obverse includes the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as referenced above. Her Majesty ascended to the British throne in 1952 following the death of her father, the king. Her coronation ceremony was held in 1953 and included 10 plaster statues of Queen’s Beasts.
Each of these 2017 2 oz Silver British Queen’s Beast Dragon Coins is available in perfect condition. An MS70 coin from the NGC has its full, original mint luster and lacks any detracting flaws on the surface areas or design features. Early Release coins are those received by the NGC for certification within 30 days of their release date from the Royal Mint.
