The modern era of Proof coins is considered to have started in 1936, when the Philadelphia Mint restarted minting of proof coins. They could be purchased either individually or in full sets. After a production pause from 1942 to 1949, production restarted again in 1950. This time they were available only in full sets. Since that time, Proof Sets have undergone numerous changes, from the number of coins included in the set, the packaging of the set, the obverse and reverse designs of coins, and what coins are included in the sets.
The 2017 Proof Set contains 2 sets of coins – the regular Proof coin set and the America the Beautiful Quarters Program set.
Included in the regular Proof Set is one each of the 2017 Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, and Kennedy Half Dollar. Included with these coins is the 2017 version of the Native American Dollar series. Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste, continues as the obverse design of the Native American Dollar. A profile of Sequoyah, the inventor of the Cherokee Syllabary is featured on the reverse. The Cherokee Syllabary gave birth to Native American journalism, and ultimately paved the way for a dialogue between the Cherokee Nation and the United States Government.
The America the Beautiful Quarters Program again included 5 coins in the Proof Set. The coins included this year feature the Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa, Ellis Island in New Jersey, the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington DC, the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Indiana, and the Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Missouri.
The packaging of the 2017 Proof Sets remains similar to the packaging of recent years. The coins are packaged in 2 individual plastic cases and placed into a cardboard outer box. The Washington Monument at sunset adorns the front of the box and images of the 5 national parks and the 5 coins included in the set are illustrated on the back of the box.
