The 1/10 oz Gold American Eagle coin has long been considered among the more popular choices in the series. When the coins debuted in 1986, the 1 oz coin had 1.362 million for a mintage compared to 912,000 for the 1/10 oz coin. Over time, all of the coins would drop in mintage, but when they rose again the 1/10 oz coin would rise to the top of the heap.
Record mintage figures for most weights in the Gold Eagle series took place in 1998 and 1999 amidst the Y2K fears. For the first time ever though, the 1/10 oz coin outsold the 1 oz gold coin in 1999. The 1/10 oz coin had a mintage of 2.750 million coins. That figure beat the 1 oz coin by more than 1 million and stands as the highest single-year mintage in program history.
