In 1990, Perth Mint introduced the Silver Australian Kookaburra as the first in a lineup of bullion coins that would feature native species on the reverse with a new design each year. This also coincided with a change in the longest-running gold bullion series at the mint; the Gold Australian Nugget.
Renamed as the Gold Australian Kangaroo, this 1 oz gold series featured a variety of weights and would follow in the Kookaburra’s footsteps as an annual-release coin with a new design on the reverse side each year. For the 2018 release, Perth Mint has five weights available. The 1 Kilo is unique in that it features a traditional kangaroo design as used on the Silver Kangaroo bullion coin. It also has the lowest mintage.
2018 Gold Australian Kangaroo coins have an unlimited mintage in the 1 oz weight, but the fractional weights have set figures. The 1/2 oz coin has the lowest at 100,000 coins, and these 2018 1/10 oz Gold Australian Kangaroo Coins have a maximum mintage of 200,000 coins.
The reverse of all 2018 1/10 oz Gold Australian Kangaroo Coins features the newest image of the creature in the coin series. This year’s design depicts two red kangaroos as they hop across the Outback. The red kangaroo is the largest of the four kangaroo species living on the continent.
On the obverse of all Gold Australian Kangaroo Coins you’ll find Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy. Her Majesty appears on all Australian coinage, and has since 1952. This is the fourth-generation effigy created for commonwealth coinage, and was developed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
All Gold Australian Kangaroo Coins in this listing are in BU condition. Coins in BU condition have no signs of wear and tear, but can feature minor flaws as a result of the striking process. These flaws are limited to breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, and contact marks.
