Gold American Eagle coins feature a historic coin design from American history. It was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle. It depicts Liberty encircled by stars representing the US states.
The obverse of all Gold American Eagle coins features Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Liberty. In his original design, Liberty was surrounded by 46 stars representing the existing US states in 1907. By 1912, the design had been updated to include 48 stars for the addition of New Mexico and Arizona. The Gold Eagle has 50 stars following the post-World War II additions of Hawaii and Alaska.
