When the Gold American Eagle coin debuted in 1986, it marked significant shifts in US coinage. The production of circulation gold coins in the United States came to an end in 1933 during the grip of the Great Depression. The return of gold coins from the United States Mint with the Gold Eagle marked another important step.
In 1834, the United States began to move away from the so-called “crown gold” alloy of 22-karat gold. By 1837, and until 1933, all US gold coins were struck with .900 gold content. The 22-karat gold content of the Gold American Eagle marked a return of higher gold content in US coinage as well.
On the obverse of the 2018 Gold American Eagle is the nation’s most iconic design. Liberty, wearing a flowing robe with hair blowing in the wind, walks forward from the nation’s capital with a torch held high in her right hand as a guiding light and an olive branch in her left to signify the nation’s hopes for peace.
The reverse of all 2018 ½ oz Gold American Eagle Coins includes an exclusive design from Miley Busiek. Used on the Gold Eagle since 1986, this design features a male eagle returning to the nest where a female is watching over a group of hatchlings.
In this listing, 2018 ½ oz Gold American Eagles are listed with a near-perfect grade from the PCGS. Coins in Mint State 69 condition show full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These flaws are limited to minuscule hairlines or contact marks located outside the primary focal areas.
First Strike coins arrived at the PCGS within the first 30 days of their release. These coins had to arrive at the PCGS or an approved depository within the initial 30 days of the US Mint’s scheduled 2018 release date for Gold Eagles.
