Each of the 2018 ¼ oz Gold American Eagle Coins in this product listing is available to you in near-perfect condition. A coin with a grade of Mint State 69 from the PCGS exhibits full, original mint luster and has a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These flaws are limited to minuscule hairlines or contact marks found outside of the coin’s primary focal areas.
The First Strike designation indicates when a coin was received for certification. In this case, the FS label is reserved for coins received by the PCGS within the first 30 days of the 2018 release date set by the United States Mint.
Together with its ½ oz counterpart, the ¼ oz Gold American Eagle is one of two fractional weights in this series that have struggled to regain their initial popularity. The ¼ oz Gold Eagle’s highest mintage year came back in 1986 when the coins were introduced and 726,031 were struck. The ¼ oz coins have only surpassed 350,000 in mintage one other time in 1999 when 564,232 were struck during the Y2K crisis.
On the obverse of all Gold American Eagle Coins you’ll find Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Liberty. Created in 1907, it debuted that same year on the $20 Gold Double Eagle and was in circulation through 1933 when the US ended its gold coin production.
The reverse of all 2018 ¼ oz Gold American Eagle Coins features Miley Busiek’s depiction of the bald eagle. In this particular design, a family of eagles is featured, with a male eagle returning to the nest where a female is guarding hatchlings.
