The fractional-weight coins of the Silver Mexican Libertad collection offer some of the greatest variety in the precious metals market. Silver Mexican Libertad coins are unique among major bullion coins for a number of reasons. One of the primary factors is the lack of an assigned face value. While the Silver Maple Leaf and Silver Eagle have face values of $5 (CAD) and $1 (USD) respectively, there is no marking of the value on the Libertad.
However, the coins are considered legal tender in the nation. The Mexican Mint and Banco de Mexico issue the coins with a floating face value based on the silver content. Were one to actually use the Silver Libertad for commercial transactions, its value would be determined by Banco de Mexico’s set value compared to silver on that day.
On the obverse of the 2018 ¼ oz Silver Mexican Libertad Coin you’ll find the cherished Winged Victory design. She is featured as she is found atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column today in Mexico City, with her wings spread wide behind her figure, her right arm outstretched, and her left hand behind her holding broken chains of servitude.
The reverse of all fractional Silver Mexican Libertad coins features the coat of arms for Mexico. This design has been modified and/or used in various versions in Mexican politics and culture for centuries dating back to the Aztec Empires that ruled modern Mexico.
All ¼ oz Silver Mexican Libertads are among the lowest minted silver coins in the series from Mexican Mint. The highest mintage number in this weight historically was 1992 with 104,000 coins struck, while 2007 was the lowest at just 3,500 coins.
Your 2018 ¼ oz Silver Mexican Libertad coin purchase offers a coin in BU condition. Coins in this condition show no indication of wear and tear, though minor flaws ranging from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks are possible.
