The Mexican Mint launched the Proof Silver Libertad series in 1983 with only a 1 oz coin available. No coins were issued in 1984 and 1985, and from 1986 until 1991 there was only the 1 oz silver coin available. In 1991, the Mexican Mint made its first addition to the series with four fractional weights introduced. Included in this introduction was the ¼ oz Proof Silver Mexican Libertad.
All of the 2018 ¼ oz Proof Silver Mexican Libertad Coins available in this product listing feature a protective capsule. These ¼ oz Proof Silver Libertad Coins represent the lowest mintage figures in the collection. There were just 2,500 coins reported struck by the Mexican Mint in 2018, and the last time the ¼ oz had a mintage higher than any of its fractional-weight counterparts was in 2008.
On the reverse of the 2018 ¼ oz Proof Silver Mexican Libertad Coins is the image of Winged Victory. She is a depiction of the Greek Goddess of Victory customized to the Mexican cause of independence from the 19th century. Her image features symbolism of self-governance and freedom in the form of a laurel wreath crown she holds aloft in her right hand, as well as the broken chains of servitude she clutches in her left hand.
The obverse of all 2018 ¼ oz Proof Silver Libertad Coins features the official coat of arms of Mexico. This modern depiction includes a powerful eagle as it wrestles with a snake from its perch on a cactus branch. This symbol has been used for more than a century in Mexico, and on the 1 oz and larger coins you’ll notice the historic versions of the design along with this modern seal.
