For collectors interested in buying silver, there are few programs better for variety than the Lunar Series II collection at Perth Mint. These 12-coin series features a different gold coin design each year, as well as a different silver coin design. While the theme is the same, for example the 2018 Year of the Dog, the design on the gold issue is different from the silver to increase demand and value. Ing Ing Jong is the designer behind both the gold and silver versions of the Proof Australian Dog coinage. For the 2018 issue, the Labrador Retriever was chosen to represent the species on the gold coins while the German Shepherd features prominently on the silver coins in the collection. Jong is an accomplished artist and designer and was hired on with the Perth Mint as a coin designer in 2011.
Her design for the 2018 Proof Silver Australian Dog Coins includes two German Shepherds. Developed as an independent breed in 1899, the German Shepherd is a working dog that was once found on farms and is now either a popular family pet, or strong working dog. The breed is highly trainable and follows commands strictly.
In the 2018 Proof Silver Australian Dog Coin Collection, you’ll find four options when purchasing the coins. These 1 Kilo Proof Silver Australian Dogs are the largest weight available but have the lowest individual mintage figure. The 1/2 oz and 1 oz silver coins are available with higher mintages of 8,000 and 5,000 respectively. There is a 2 oz coin in the issue, but it’s only available in the 3-coin proof set.
On the obverse of all Proof Silver Australian Dog Coins, you’ll find Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy. Her Majesty is captured on this coin in her fourth-generation depiction since 1952. This design came from Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998.
The reverse of the 2018 1 Kilo Proof Silver Australian Dog Coin includes the German Shepherd design from Jong. This image includes two German Shepherds, one adult lying behind a young puppy in the immediate foreground.
