Silver Australian Koala coins debuted in 2007, joining the existing major bullion programs of the Silver Kookaburra and Gold Kangaroo. Those coins, like the Silver Koala today, feature a new design each year and were released under those names in 1990. The Gold Kangaroo actually dates to 1986, but was known as the Gold Nugget.
A new koala design is used on the reverse of the Silver Australian Koala each year, but that’s not all that is new in 2018. In 2016, the Perth Mint changed its silver bullion coin programs by introducing the all-new Silver Australian Kangaroo bullion coin and using .9999 fine silver. As of 2018, both the Silver Kookaburra and these Silver Koalas now also feature .9999 fine silver.
All 2018 1 Kilo Silver Australian Koala coins in this listing are in BU condition. Coins in BU condition show no signs of wear and tear, but can often feature minor flaws from the production process at the mint. These flaws are limited to breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, and contact marks.
On the obverse of the Silver Australian Koala coin is the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty features on all Australian coins released annually, and this design represents the fourth-generation portrait of the Queen created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
The reverse of the 2018 1 Kilo Silver Australian Koala coin includes the latest design in the collection. The koala is captured as it sits in a tree clutching the branches below it for balance. Often referred to as the koala bear, the animal is actually of a different species known as the marsupial, and it is endemic to Australia.
