With each release of coins in the Lunar Series II collection, the Perth Mint issues a different design for the gold and silver coin. This year for the Year of the Dog, Ing Ing Jong used the German Shepherd on the silver coins, while these 1 oz gold coins feature the Labrador Retriever, a beloved hunting partner and extremely capable service dog.
The Gold Australian Dog collection is more diverse than its silver counterpart, though both series offer great options to investors and collectors. While the silver program is heavily weighted toward coins above 1 oz, the gold program has four fractional-weight coins to go along with the 1 oz, 2 oz, oz, and 1 Kilo choices.
On the reverse of the 2018 1 oz Gold Australian Dog Coin you’ll find the image of a Labrador Retriever. One of the most popular breeds in the Western world, Labs are known as great companions and capable service dogs to hunters and the disabled alike. Jong’s design includes a stylized pine tree in the background with traditional markers of the Chinese character for dog, the Perth Mint’s mint mark, and the name of the release, “Year of the Dog.”
The obverse of all Gold Australian Dog coins in 2018 includes the fourth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The longest reigning monarch alive in the world today, Her Majesty features on these coins in a right-profile portrait created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
Each 2018 1 oz Gold Australian Dog Coin listed here is in BU condition. Coins in this condition show no signs of wear and tear, but minor flaws resulting from the striking of blanks during production are possible. These flaws are limited to minor issues such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, and contact marks.
