Emus are the second-largest living birds in the world by a measure of height. Only the ostrich, a cousin species to the emu, is larger than the emu. However, the emu does enjoy the title of largest flightless bird on the Australian continent, where the creatures are endemic. At one point in history, the emu’s range covered most of the Australian mainland, as well as Tasmania and King Island. However, those subspecies of emus were wiped out shortly after 1788 and the settlement of Australia by Europeans.
In the new Silver Australian Emu release, the Perth Mint continues to expand its offering of silver coins that feature images of native species to the continent. The first of these was the popular Silver Kookaburra, which has been supported over the years by the additions of the Silver Koala, Silver Wedge Tail Eagle, Silver Kangaroo, and the Silver Swan. The Silver Kangaroo, introduced in 2016, was the first to feature .9999 fine silver, which is now common in the most popular issues.
On the reverse of the 2018 1 oz Silver Australian Emu coin you’ll find the large, flightless bird as it calmly walks across the flora-covered landscape of Australia. The obverse of the Silver Australian Emu coin bears the common right-profile portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fourth-generation design created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
With purchase of a 2018 1 oz Silver Australian Emu coin today you receive a product with an Early Release label and Mint State 69 certification. The MS69 certification from the NGC indicates the coins have full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. The ER label denotes the arrival of the coins for certification with the NGC within the first 30 days of their 2018 release by the Perth Mint.
