The Silverback Gorilla silver bullion coin series is issued by the Scottsdale Mint for the Republic of Congo. A thin slice of land that juts inland from the Atlantic Ocean on Africa’s west coast, the Republic of Congo is home to significant populations of the continent’s threatened gorilla species. The Silverback Gorilla is prominently featured in new relief each year in this coin series. Compared to their cousins the chimpanzee and bonobo, the gorilla is a massive herbivorous ape which is predominantly ground dwelling in nature. Like the chimp and bonobo, the gorilla is closely related to humans at a DNA level with estimates placing the similarity in a range of 95 to 99%. The gorilla is today the largest living primate in the world.
Silverback is a term used to refer to the alpha male, or eldest male, in a family unit. Gorilla family units are known as troops and the silverback is so-called for the stripe of white and/or grey fur running down its back and haunches. The silverback’s job is to protect the family and he will do so through displays of power and dominance, such as tearing up plants and trees, stomping his feet, pounding his chest, and standing on his hind legs. This is no small display of power either given the average silverback stands up to 6’5” tall on its hind legs.
On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz Silver Congo Silverback Gorilla Coin, you’ll find a new design for the 2018 release. This fourth issue in the collection includes the disgruntled face of a male Silverback gorilla. Engravings around the design field include “Congo Silverback Gorilla” and “2018 1 oz 999 Silver.”
The reverse face of the Silver Congo Silverback Gorilla Coin features the coat of arms for the Republic of Congo. A former French colony, the crowned shield in the coat of arms features a rampant lion with a torch and is supported on either side by African elephants. Below is a banner with the national motto in French of “Unite ~ Travail ~ Progres,” which translates to English as “Unity, Work, Progress.”
