Upon its release from the United States Mint in 1986, the Gold American Eagle coin became the purest gold coin ever issued by the US. Original gold coins from the US Mint in the 18th and 19th centuries were available in what was known as the “crown gold” alloy. In 1834, the US Mint lowered the gold content in its coins and settled at .900 content by 1837.
From 1837 until 1986, no American gold coin had featured a metal content higher than .900. With the release of the Gold Eagle, and its 22-karat gold content, the US Mint had its purest gold coin available in more than 100 years.
In this product listing you’ll receive a 2018 1 oz Gold American Eagle Coin in perfect condition from the NGC. A Mint State 70 coin features full, original mint luster with no detracting flaws found anywhere in the design field or surface areas of the coin. As an Early Release specimen, these coins were received for certification by the NGC within the first 30 days of the 2018 release date set by the US Mint.
On the obverse of all 2018 Gold Eagles is the image of Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Conceived in 1907, this figure of Liberty was created for use on American gold coins and featured prominently on the $20 Gold Double Eagle until 1933 when US gold coin production was halted.
The reverse of the 2018 1 oz Gold American Eagle coin features the family of nesting bald eagles designed by sculptor Miley Busiek. It features a male eagle carrying an olive branch as it flies back to the nest where a female guards a group of hatchlings.
