On the obverse of all Gold American Eagle coins you’ll notice Lady Liberty. This depiction of Liberty features her figure with a robe and free flowing hair as she strides forward confidently from Washington DC. She holds a torch high in her right hand as a guiding light for the nation and you can see the US Capitol Building at her feet.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens design this image in 1907 at the behest of President Theodore Roosevelt. President Roosevelt led a charge to revamp American coin design to meet the nation’s growing status, and Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty remains today as the greatest coin design in American history in the minds of many.
The reverse of all 2018 1 oz Gold American Eagle Coins includes a grouping of bald eagles in their nest. The nest contains hatchlings under the watchful eye of one adult eagle while another flies overhead with an olive branch in its talons. This was created specifically for the Gold Eagle in 1986 by Miley Busiek.
