Among 1 oz gold coins for sale around the world, the Gold American Eagle is viewed with great interest each year when it is released. Though the design never changes, the chosen obverse imagery represents a beautiful rendering of the 1907 Augustus Saint-Gaudens creation for the $20 Gold Double Eagle. This design is considered the greatest in American coining history by many numismatists. Today, 2018 1 oz Gold American Eagle Coins are available to purchase online at Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Ships to you inside individual plastic flips, mint tubes of 20 coins, or Monster Boxes of 500 coins!
  • 33rd issue of Gold American Eagle coins!
  • Consists of One Troy ounce of actual gold content in BU condition.
  • Face value of $50 (USD) is fully backed by the US government.
  • Obverse revives the classic Lady Liberty design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
  • Reverse depicts one adult eagle flying over a nest of hatchlings with another adult eagle standing guard.

The 1 oz Gold American Eagle Coin has seen drastic ebbs and flows in its mintage figures over the course of time. As a bullion coin, much of this rise and fall is tied closely to the price of gold and economic market fluctuations. The highest mintage figures for the 1 oz coin came on its debut in 1986 (1.362 million), in 1998 (1.468 million) and 1999 (1.505 million) during the Y2K crisis, and again in 2009 (1.493 million) and 2010 (1.125 million) at the height of the Great Recession.

Investors move back and forth through the Gold American Eagle series from the 1 oz coin through the fractional weights, the 1/10 oz in particular, when prices rise and fall. The 1/10 oz coin gained massive popularity during the Y2K crisis, outperforming the 1 oz coin in 1999. More recently, when gold surged in 2016 the 1/10 oz coin was a greater benefactor, though the 1 oz coin surged as well.

Each 2018 1 oz Gold American Eagle Coin is available in BU condition. Coins in this condition have no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice minor flaws from the production process that range from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks.

The obverse of all Gold American Eagle coinage features the image of Lady Liberty. This figure of Liberty was created in 1907 by Saint-Gaudens at a time when America was revamping its coin design, and her depiction is much more free and unfettered than previous Greek-Roman designs. Her hair and robe flow in the breeze as she strides confidently forward into an unknown future.

On the reverse of the 2018 1 oz Gold American Eagle is the design of an American bald eagle family. It features one eagle returning to the nest with an olive branch, while another eagle watches over a group of hatchlings in the nest below.
