The Black Bull of Clarence came to the Queen’s Royal Arms today through King Edward IV. He was the first King of England from the House of York. He laid his claim to the throne through his great-grandfather Roger Mortimer, a descendant of the Duke of Clarence. Richard II had been the presumptive heir but was usurped by his nephew Henry IV.
Edward IV was involved in Britain’s Wars of the Roses between the Lancastrian King Henry VI and the Yorkist Edward IV. After a back-and-forth war, Edward IV secured his spot as King of England by defeating Henry’s forces and imprisoning him in the Tower of London.
