The Red Dragon of Wales originates in early 6th century Wales when it was known as the red dragon of Cadwallader, the ancient king of Gwynedd. The dragon later played a big role in the Tudor Dynasty with King Henry VII carrying the fiery red dragon on his battle standard and King Henry VIII using it on the sails of his Royal Navy ships.
On the reverse of 2018 1 oz Proof Silver British Queen’s Beast Dragons is the image of the Red Dragon of Wales as it was featured in the arms of Llewelyn ap Griffith, the final native Prince of Wales. Griffith’s coat of arms included a quartered shield with a leopard in each quadrant and was supported by the fiery red dragon. Queen Elizabeth II has a deep connection to the Red Dragon as it was under her reign in 1959 that the red dragon was made the official emblem of Wales and placed on its flag.
The obverse of 2018 Proof Silver British Queen’s Beast Dragons includes the latest effigy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Her right-profile portrait featured here was designed in 2015 by Jody Clark and depicts the monarch with the Royal Diadem crown. Also known as the George IV State Diadem, this crown was commissioned by George IV in 1820 and features more than 1,333 diamonds.
