The first Krugerrand coins ever issued from the South African Mint were available in 1 oz of gold. Those coins were struck to promote the vast gold reserves of South Africa and encourage private investment in gold bullion coins as a means of protecting individual wealth. The South African Mint only ever offered the Krugerrand in gold, with fractional weights introduced in the 1970s, for over five decades.
In 2017, the South African Mint celebrated 50 years of the Krugerrand by issuing the coin in two different metals for the first time ever. First up was a Silver Krugerrand in BU, which was eventually followed that same year by collectible Proof Silver Krugerrands and a stunning Platinum Krugerrand as well.
All of the 2018 1 oz Proof Silver South African Krugerrand Coins in this product listing are available to you inside of South African Mint display boxes. The coins ship in black display boxes with the South African Mint name on them and include a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
On the obverse of the Proof Silver South African Krugerrand is the effigy of Paul Kruger introduced in 1967 and refined in 1994 by Otto Schultz. This left-profile portrait captures the image of a man known to Boers in South Africa during the 19th century as Oom Paul, or simply Uncle Paul.
The reverse side of 2018 1 oz Proof Silver South African Krugerrand coins features the image of a Springbok antelope. Found throughout the southern nations of the African continent, the Springbok is particularly prominent in the nation of South Africa where it has become an unofficial national symbol.
