The Silver Kookaburra series of coins from the Perth Mint led to a changing trend in coin design from Australia’s oldest mint. New designs were already in use on the Gold Nugget series from Perth at this time, but that series didn’t feature native animal species. The 1990 introduction of the Silver Kookaburra brought the continent’s native animals to the forefront of 1 oz silver Australian coin design.
All 2018 1 oz Silver Australian Kookaburra Coins you can purchase right now earned Mint State 69 grades from the NGC. Considered a near-perfect certification, each of these coins features full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These flaws are limited to minuscule hairlines and contact marks.
The Early Release label included in the plastic slab means that the coins were received within a set timeframe by the NGC. Coins must arrive within the first 30 days of their 2018 release date from the Perth Mint in order to earn the ER label.
On the obverse of all Silver Australian Kookaburra coins is an effigy of England’s ruling monarch. The Queen of England is the monarch of all commonwealth nations as well, and as such Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse of Australian coinage in right-profile relief. This design comes from Ian Rank-Broadley and was created for the Royal Mint in 1998.
The latest kookaburra image appears on the reverse of the 2018 1 oz Silver Australian Kookaburra Coin. You’ll find a single kookaburra in flight through the Outback with its wings spread wide and the moon rising into the sky in the background.
