Swans are closely related to other waterfowl like geese and ducks, and most swans will live out their lives in monogamous relationships. However, it is possible for swans to “divorce” themselves from one another, typically as a result of nesting failure.
When the modern city of Perth was first founded in 1829, it was known as the Swan River Colony. The village had been founded on the banks of the Swan River in Western Australia that year. Today, the state flag of Western Australia features a swan in its design and the Perth Mint has adopted the swan as its official logo.

Created for the Royal Mint of England in 1998 as the fourth-generation design on British coins, it shows the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. 2018 is the last time this portrait featured on most Australian coins, including the coins of the Silver Swan Series.
On the reverse side of 2018 1 oz Silver Swans is a depiction of two swans. In this design, an adult swan is captured in a three-quarter right-profile relief with its young hatchling at its side. This was the first of many designs in the young collection to feature swans with their hatchlings, rather than just a singular swan.
